7 Heroism
News of the trial within the Archeron Family quickly spread like wildfire amongst Faustâs nobility. While some were shocked by the revelation, others were left deep in thought. Raymond Joseph was amongst that latter group, listening to a report in a private library within the family castle on Island 6-6. After a long time, he turned to Valen. âGaton isnât just disciplining his family; this means the matter isnât done yet. One of his own sons is dead for the conspiracy, but Faulk is still alive.â
Valen fell silent, a grave expression on his face. Initially, the Archerons didnât seem to have suffered from the assassination attempt at all. In fact, they had managed to cripple Faulk and several youths from families subordinates to the Josephs. Although those other youths werenât from the Fourteen, they were still children of nobles whoâd settled down permanently in Faust proper. Even Count Goliath would have to bear an entire week of inquiry for thatâwhile Gaton was a member of the Assembly as well, the families in the seventh layer did not have veto powers.
Alas, the matter was fated to reach no conclusion. The Divine Alliance Assembly was just thatâa place where the members of the Alliance met to discuss affairs. Whether the results of the votes were executed depended on the checks and balances of the various powers behind the scenes. A Count as tyrannical as Goliath couldnât possibly be sentenced to anything severe just for harming a few noble children. Besides, even though the public was allowed to sit in at the assemblies, only the Fourteen actually possessed official seats. The representatives of these families would certainly know everything, including inside information about the issue with Faust. The week of annoyance for Goliath would just be a farce to help the weaker families think their reputations were preserved. It was simply the best way to prevent unnecessary infighting.
Still... Not only was Gaton able to find evidence against Warren immediately, but heâd also called for an internal trial on the same night and executed Warren in front of the entire family. A trial of such scale couldnât possibly remain secret, but it wasnât like he wanted it hushed anyway. Now, Gaton had lost a son to the Josephsâ schemes; he would be justified in wanting Duke Joseph to suffer a similar loss. Faulk would not do; Warren was one of the conspirators, and so another equal person had to die. At the same time, the Marquis had also transmitted a clear message to all the nobles of FaustâRichard Archeron was the one person that was completely off-limits. Anyone who wanted to touch a hair on his head had to be prepared for war with all Archerons.
Valen stood up, responding solemnly, âMy Lord, Richardâs status in the Archeron family is much greater than we had anticipated. Marquis Gaton even declared him one of the core members of the family, even though he hasnât yet made a true rune knight. There must be some inside news we have missed; I think we might need to prepare for another war.
